Crossrail gets the green light!

7 08 2008

Hi all

After all the excitement of the iPhone 3G, I thought I would change the subject and look at something that I was supposed to discuss some time ago but now has come back in mind!

It is Crossrail!  But what is Crossrail?  Here’s a brief background.  Crossrail is simply a high speed network similar to the Paris RER.  It is one super tube line that will relieve in particular crowded London Underground stations in central London.

Very recently, the Crossrail project was given final approval which means that a high speed network in London will finally become a reality!  So where will Crossrail run?

It will effectively run from west to east, starting in Maidenhead in the West then passing through towns such as Slough, Iver and a branch from Heathrow to Ealing and then into tunnel to Paddington.  The central London section will travel to Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel.

There will be two branches at this point where one heads towards Stratford, Ilford, Romford and ending in Shenfield, while the other heads towards the Isle of Dogs, Woolwich and onto Abbey Wood.

If this is getting complicated in description, a link to the Crossrail map can be accessed here.

Looks pretty ambitious doesn’t it?  Well it has been given the go ahead, but it will probably take years to build.  At the moment, nothing yet can be started because there is no money to put into the project!

What are your views of Crossrail?  A good transport network? Let me know!
